I started my martial arts journey 33 years ago. At the age of 4 years old I started Judo, then at 6 years old I started Taekwondo in which I'm still training now. I also trained in boxing for 3 years.
It's been a life long journey with many ups and downs, great achievements and success. My journey started with Mr. Jenkins in judo when I was 4 , I really enjoyed this style but became frustrated that I couldn't kick or punch anyone, especially after watching martial arts movies I wanted to be able to do this, so I was lucky enough to come across my first and only Taekwondo instructor Grand Master Clive Harrison who at the time was a carpenter who fitted our doors in the house. We got talking and he told me he did Taekwondo and gave me some advertisements so I went along to the next lesson and loved it. This was exactly what I was looking for and I have never looked back!
Over my 33 years I have had some amazing times, learned so many life skills and met some amazing loyal and lifelong friends!
I started teaching Hall family TKD in 2005 and run 3 clubs with my wife Sarah Hall and the support of our blackbelts/instructors.
I have won 5 world titles in 4 major world championships the biggest being 185 countries and over 3000 competitors.
Over the years I have earned hundreds of national and international titles from individuals to team events. I have been on team England and the England squad many times.
I am a recognised colour belt and blackbelt examiner.
I have trained thousands of students over the years and got many to blackbelt, some of which have gone on to win there own world titles.
I have been in the the hall of fame 6 times form 2 groups , MAI AND WUMA.
I have passed and earned every single grading from white belt to 7th degree blackbelt on the floor physically. I have never skipped or missed any time or fast tracked my gradings and achieved 7th degree blackbelt at 36. And I am the first student that GM Harrison has got from white belt to master grade.
Starting a Martial arts is a life long journey and believe me one worth taking! I have had many difficult times in my life, including some very dark times where things could have been very different. I've been homeless and lived in my car, on friends floors, with family. I have lost jobs, had no money to eat at times and suffered bad depression. But through all this I finally came out the other side, and it's martial arts that has kept me going.
After all this, having a family, running 3 clubs, and working full time, I'm still training and teaching. I never gave up! Like I said martial arts is for life - no matter how hard things get you have always got martial arts.
So please if your thinking of starting or want to start - just do it. Don't wait for the right time, invariably it never comes. You will never look back trust me. Nothing worth having in life is easy, don't expect it to be. Nothing worth having should be easy or handed to you. Working hard, learning, failing, achieving is all part of the journey.
I hope that reading this will help some or you along the way and inspire you to give it a chance , never give up and work hard.
I started training in Tae Kwon Do in 1999 after some persuasion from my two younger brothers. A demonstration was held one evening in our local primary school and after watching this they were enthralled and persuaded me to join along with them. I joined under Mr. Johnson, 5th degree black belt. My brothers and I all took our first grading together and we all successfully passed, I managed to pass with the highest result possible which gave me a taste of what I could achieve. I soon found that Tae Kwon Do was something that I thoroughly enjoyed, and although my brothers soon lost interest I decided to continue with my training. Over the years through training I have been presented with many opportunities to learn other new and exciting skills, including self-defence and pressure points.
I started entering competitions as a yellow belt for both patterns and sparring, and have entered many national and international competitions over the years. I have earned many medals and trophies over the years, including the British championships, English championships, and World Championships.
I passed all my coloured belt grading’s with the highest possible passes and on the first attempts and in 2005 I felt ready to go for my 1st Dan grading.
After achieving my black belt I wanted to progress my training further and sought the opportunity to become and instructor myself and give other people the chance to benefit from training as I had done. I became an assistant instructor for Mr Manuschka in 2006 and in 2007 I took my 2nd Dan grading in Derby, and again successfully passed.
In 2010 my instructor along with other like minded ones formed a new association and asked if I would become the treasurer. Through this I met and began to train with Mr. Hall, who helped me to properly prepare for my 3rd Dan grading. In the same year I successfully passed my 3rd Dan grading, after which I decided to open up some new clubs with my now husband, Luke. Our first joint students to achieve black belt did so in October 2011. In 2017 we left the association to give us the freedom and opportunity to do much more. We now work closely with the International Taekwondo Council as an independent school. Our children are following our paths and train with us as a family!
I also continued on my training journey grading for my 4th and 5th Dan under the instruction of my husband, and with the support of Grand Master Harrison, and in October 2022 I successfully achieved my 6th Dan, and as such am one of the very few high grade females in the Country.
When I started out on my journey I would have never envisaged I would end up a black belt, let alone the grade I am now! Out of the class of us that started I was the only one of us to make it to black belt, and this is something I have continued to see along my journey. The higher up the grades you go, the less people make it, not because they fail – but because they quit, and the numbers for women at higher levels are much lower than the number of males that make it.
My wish for TKD is to see more females get through the ranks and into these high grades. Over the years I have seen an increase in female students wanting to learn a martial art. I would like to think that I can be an inspiration to the younger students, particularly the girls. I hope to inspire them to think that they can achieve what I have with hard work and dedication. The confidence that Taekwondo has helped me to develop has been useful not only in training, but also in my work life, where I have channeled the skills I have learned and the confidence it has given me to work my way up the career path.
I have benefited from continuing my training in more ways than just fitness. Training has given me so much confidence and the ability to believe in myself to achieve great things as it can do for so many others!
I began my Taekwondo journey with ‘Luke Hall School of Taekwondo‘ back in 2008 due to many years of being bullied. A good friend of mine told me he taught Taekwondo and it would be the perfect place for me to learn to defend myself. After my very first lesson I quickly learnt I had found the perfect place to channel my very competitive nature. I have had the enjoyment of watching the club go from something small to now being spread over two counties. Since forming as Hall Family Taekwondo the club has gone from strength to strength, it is a family orientated environment in which great friendships are made, you are constantly pushed to go beyond your limits and best of all you are taught skills that actually work. Hall Family always encourages you to participate in competitions, which has allowed me to compete at national and world level. We attend seminars and learn from some of the best martial art practitioners in the world. We are also continually supporting local events, charities and have even participated in a Guinness World Record attempt.
I had always dreamed of being a black belt after watching some of the great movie icons such as Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and Jet Li. Once I achieved my 1st Dan I soon realised that the journey was only just beginning and I needed to push myself further. I am proud to be an instructor with Hall Family Taekwondo and as of 2022 I am now a 4th Degree Black Belt and Examiner. Being able to watch and teach the next generation of martial artists brings me a lot of enjoyment as martial arts is about giving back and inspiring. We are a very welcoming family and always encourage people from all walks of life, young and old, to come along and give it a go.
I started my Taekwondo journey just after I turned 40 years young. I was asked to join in to help as my son started Hall family tkd as they just started a class at his school. I am now entering my 9th year with Hall family and have surpassed my goals I had when I started. I have trained with some famous names in martial arts and have met some really great people that have shared their knowledge to myself and others I have reached the grade of 2nd Dan black belt and pushing forward to my next grading. Over the years I have done some competitions and the highlight of them all is coming 2nd in the World Championships in sparring. We as a family have done loads of charity events and I was proud to of been able to stand next to my instructor Mr. Luke Hall and my fellow student Nathan Jones to do challenge 50 for Macmillan’s. But helping other reach their own goals is more then winning gold for myself and since I became a instructor watching students come through the ranks is rewarding in itself.
My son Harry started his journey with Hall Family Taekwondo in 2014 aged 6 years and after sitting watching him I decided to join in. I have always had an interest in martial arts after training in Karate as a teenager. My journey to date has been one of difficulties, injuries and frustration but it has always been fun. With Hall Family Taekwondo you will gain a sense of confidence and training brings out your hidden strengths. I have met so many great people, young and old and I would like to thank you all for your help and support. Every day is another step closer to achieving my goals and look forward to continuing my journey. Thank you all.
I started TKD when I was 4 and half years old, but at a different club. After 2 years I had a break, but after one year I asked my mum if I can start again, she said yes, if I feel to go this way. This time I had a strong determination to continue, but a different club - Hall Family TKD. I felt comfortable and happy. I started to continue with new people. I found new friends, I went up the ranks. I push myself through. Hall Family TKD gave me a lots of confidence, power, responsibility and the understanding of myself and other people. Now I am 11 years old, my mum is very proud of me. Thank you Mr. and Mrs.Hall for putting in the effort into teach me to be better, stronger, helpful and to protect myself and other people. I will do more and more. I want to go as far as I can go. Thank you.
I joined the Hall Family Taekwondo in 2015 aged 14. I started my Taekwondo journey at another club which closed down. I felt instantly comfortable at the Hall Family academy, I grew in confidence thanks to Mr. & Mrs. Hall and did my first grading in July 2015. I’ve had some ups and downs during my gradings but was delighted when I passed my black belt, I’m so now working toward my 2nd Dan. I have competed in some competitions starting with the Welsh Open in Abergavenny where I got 2nd and 3rd place. I have enjoyed feeling part of a team, a family and am now looking forward to see how far I can get.
I started my martial arts journey when was 17 doing karate. I got to the rank of brown belt and due to family commitments quit. I regretted never sticking with it to achieve black belt. When I was 39 I restarted my journey with Taekwondo as a family this time. My goal was to get to 1st Dan. Taekwondo was also a chance to keep fit and make life long friends. The journey to 1st Dan was a great one but it does have its fare share of difficulties along the way. The Tenets of Taekwondo are a really good set of rules to abide by not only in the dojang but in general life. I definitely believe Taekwondo makes us better people. When I graded to 1st Dan it was one of my greatest achievements but I didn't stop at that I training even harder and I am now a 2nd degree black belt. I have now been training for nearly 10 years and will continue as long as I can and push myself and others to achieve the best they can.
I started Tae Kwon Do at the age of 8 and was very shy and timid. TKD helped me with my confidence and when I was 14 I took part in my first competition. I was nervous but also very excited and when I came home with a trophy I was over the moon. Most of the people who started when I did had stopped training altogether but I was determined to continue making progress and growing in confidence. Each new grading was a challenge and I was disappointed if I failed at the first attempt but I received fantastic support and encouragement from all the other students who urged me to try again. I know it may take a while but I am determined to reach 1st Dan.
I started my journey when I turn 7 and have been doing it for 8 years so far. I started taekwondo so I could gain more confidence and a knowledge of how to protect myself when I am older. Taekwondo for me ever since I started has become a major part of my life and chapters of my story. I have been able to achieve many things in my experience within the martial art, like when I was awarded my 1st Dan Black belt when I was 14 as well as accomplish many medal and trophies when doing competitions. Being a part of hall family taekwondo for me has always felt like I wasn't just a student but always part of a community where you are looked after and I guess I could say a second family. I don't know what will come in my ongoing journey in taekwondo but I hope I manage to keep adding to my achievement and see how far I can go.
After a sit down with Charley today, I asked all the questions surrounding what his goals were with Tae Kwon Do. What he wanted to accomplish, his likes and dislikes and what he thought about the sport and art of Tae Kwon Do. Charley started his journey back when he was just aged 5 in 2017.
Now aged 9 and certainly not the little boy that would hang on to mum and dad like his life depended on it. Charley is quite a sensitive boy, having to over come his fears and build his self confidence, a journey everyone has watched and gone through themselves. Charley joined Hall Tae Kwon Do as it was so much different from the regular everyday sports. I asked Charley why he has continued with it and what he most enjoyed about it so far. His answer was the self defence aspect that he enjoyed the most, he said he also enjoyed sparing and winning at a tournament.
At the age of 9 Charley has progressed well through his belts and aims to smash his upcoming grading to reach blue tag. I asked Charley what his goals were and what he wanted to achieve the most. His answer was and always has been to achieve a black belt. As a extremely proud dad I believe he will achieve this. Both myself and his equally proud mum have pushed hard the lesson that dedication and commitment is the only way he will achieve his goals. This is something Charley now understands and has radically changed his attitude, effort and determination.
Like all of us, covid and the new way of life has slowed many of us down. Despite these changes, Charley has remained focused and with the odd wobble he’s found his feet again. As always with Charley and kids of this age there is an incentive to help them keep an eye on the ball. In this case it’s going cost dad a small fortune if he does hit that black belt, and in my eyes no cost is enough to see him succeed. Go get it son :)
I started my tkd journey in 2013 when I was 33 and what a journey it has been after my husband and two sons had started I sort of got talked into joining them. It was really nice to do something as a family but I never wanted to do any grading I was there to support my boys and the exercise as wanted to lose weight, but as time went on my conference grow and with the support from my instructors and the friends I have made along the way I did my first grading and passed. I felt great I was very nervous and scared, in all honesty I hate standing in front of people I hated standing up in front of a class at school so it was a real big thing for me to do, but everyone was very nice and felt at ease on the night. Although I said I’m not doing another grading again but I did and I've never given up, even entered competitions completely out of my comfort zone but I’ve achieved 3 gold medal 2 silver and 1 bronze all in sparring. 6 years down the line it was finely time for me to go for my black belt and I was unsuccessful. Yes it set me back and I lost a lot of confidence with it but I was more determined I would pass it one day with lots of support and encouragement it was one of my best achievements I’ve done I went into the dojang that morning confident. I felt great so even if I didn’t pass this time I knew I gave it my best but obviously my hard work paid off because I passed. Now I am a 2nd Dan passing that in 2019 I am now working towards my 3rd Dan
My confidence has built up a lot, I’ve lost a total of 7 stone of weight along the way, I’ve done some amazing charity events and in the Guinness book of records. I’ve met some amazing people and friends for life it been a very rewarding 8 years and it been great seeing others getting their achievements.
I started Taekwondo give myself more confidence. I was bullied from primary school till I left high school and I had people saying I will not get any where or achieve anything. I started to believe it. Since starting taekwondo my confidence has grown and have now achieved my black tag. Training is difficult on times as I do have some injuries but with persistence I am progressing. Taekwondo has also been good as I have made some great friends and have a lot of support from Mr and Mrs Hall. I will continue to do the best I can and reach my goal of black belt. I have entered a few competitions over the years and met some nice people on the way and won a couple of medals. I am confident that I can look after myself out of the dojang thanks to my training.
My journey into Taekwondo has been a short one. I joined The Hall family Taekwondo in January 2019 spurred on by my son Harry who had recently attained his 1st Dan black belt, it was a bit daunting starting a new sport in my fifty’s but I have enjoyed keeping fit, making friends and having fun, I did my 1st grading in October 2019. I have enjoyed the many charity events held, I had the easy task in the Macmillan challenge 50, I just had to shave the heads of Mr Hall, Jon and Nathan. I joined in on the Guinness world record attempt in 2016 just to make up the numbers. I would like to thank Mr & Mrs Hall and all the other instructors and members for their help and endless patience, you’re all great
I started training when I was 4. I was hyper, excited and a little bit shy. I made a lot of friends on the first day and had a lot of fun. The first tournament I won 1 trophy and I was over the moon. Now I am 9, nearly 10 and I am a blue belt and I have built my confidence and am a high grade.
